Hunting is a serious activity, and those hoping to do some hunting need to be properly prepared. That’s why some states require hunting education before hunting on private or public land.
If you want to go hunting here in Texas, you’ll need to know about the legal requirements beforehand. Keep reading to learn more about whether or not hunter education is required in Texas.
Does Texas Require Hunter Education?
Under Texas regulations, some hunters will need to undergo hunter education before going hunting. According to Texas Parks & Wildlife, all hunters born after September 2, 1971, must complete a hunter education course. There are exceptions for hunters under the age of 9 and for those in law enforcement or the military, including veterans who were honorably discharged. There are additional requirements for all hunters as well as special requirements for hunters under the age of 17 as explained below.
What Hunter Education Is Required?
Hunters have three options for completing their education course. They can complete an online-only course with an approved online provider, they can complete a 6-hour classroom-based course or they can complete a combination of online and field training. Check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife site to learn more about how to complete your hunter education. The standard price of hunter education is $15, but some organizations, like Las Huellas, may offer a free course.
What Else Is Required to Hunt in Texas?
In addition to hunter education, hunters will also need to get a hunting license. You won’t need proof of your hunter education course in order to get a license, but you will need to carry proof of both while hunting. In addition to getting a license and completing hunter education, those under the age of 17 must also be accompanied by a licensed hunter who has either completed hunter education or is exempt.
